Di Canio rage eased by victory

Swindon manager Paolo Di Canio was sent off as his side maintained their promotion challenge with a fiery 1-0 victory over 10-man Macclesfield.

Paul Benson's first league goal since joining Swindon from Charlton earlier this month was enough to earn the home side a victory to keep up the pressure on the top three.

Benson rose to nod home debutant Luke Rooney's cross 14 minutes from time. Di Canio was forced to watch that winner from the stand after being banished from the touchline midway through the second-half for over-protesting to referee Keith Stroud after the hosts were denied a free-kick.

The victory would have been by a greater margin but for midfielder Matt Ritchie blazing a late penalty over the crossbar.

Macclesfield finished the game with 10 men after captain Nat Brown was shown a straight red card for a shove on Swindon defender Aden Flint, which led to the penalty award.

Swindon were good value for the three points after dominating possession but Macclesfield could have nicked an unlikely point but for a woeful finish by Matt Hamshaw when clean through.
