Pilgrims notch first win

Rock-bottom Plymouth claimed their first league win of the season after goals from on-loan Oldham striker Warren Feeney and Robbie Williams gave them a 2-0 victory over Macclesfield.

Argyle, with caretaker manager Carl Fletcher taking charge of his first match, attacked from the off and were rewarded when Feeney converted Connor Hourihane's 20th minute cross.

The home side, with just one point before the start of the game, doubled their lead thanks to a thumping 25 yard free-kick from left-back Williams which crashed in off the underside of the bar.

Ladjie Soukouna followed in to make sure but the assistant referee had already flagged the ball was over the goal-line before the home midfielder headed in.

Soukouna signalled the home side's intent with a thundering eighth minute angled drive that flew just wide.

Hourihane also tested Macclesfield keeper Jose Veiga as the Greens poured forward with Will Atkinson cracking a shot just wide before half time.

Sam Wedgebury had the visitors best first-half effort but the Greens began the second spell as they started the first, on the front foot, roared on by the majority of a 6,005 attendance.

In stoppage-time visiting substitute Waide Fairhurst thumped a rising drive just over.

With caretaker keeper-coach Romain Larrieu assisting Fletcher, Jake Cole kept Argyle's first clean sheet of the season.
