Macclesfield Town showed their promotion credentials as they battled through fatigue to produce a stirring fightback against struggling Bury.
Having played in an exhilarating 5-0 midweek away win at Notts County, the Cheshire team appeared flat in the first half. Crisis club Bury, however, played some fluid passing football in the opening stages and deservedly took the lead in the 14th minute when man-of -the match Simon Whaley picked out Lee Unsworth at the far post for the wing back to deliver a clinical finish back across the face of goal.
Macclesfield tried to respond and had their best first half chance in the 33rd minute when man mountain striker Jonathan Parkin lashed a 30 yard volley inches over the cross bar. Bury, however, should have extended their lead in the 39th minute when Jon Newby missed a Tom Kennedy cross with the goal beckoning.
Macclesfield took advantage in the 48th minute when the transfer-listed Michael Welch thundered home a 20-yard left-foot half volley from the edge of the box.
Bury tried to respond with Whaley forcing Fettis to save at the second attempt with a powerful low drive. Andy Keogh then went close with a half volley from the penalty spot unfortunately planted straight at the ever present Fettis.
Macc thought they had taken the lead in the 76th minute when Parkin sent a goal-bound header looping over Andy Marriott only for John Fitzgerald to hook off the goal line with an acrobatic scissor kick. They did not have long to wait however as skipper Matt Tipton beat the offside trap before committing Marriott and laying the ball square for Parkin to net his 21st of the season from close range.
