Chester City plunged further into the relegation mire with defeat in the Cheshire derby.
Goals from John Rooney and Gareth Evans within the first half hour were enough to give Macclesfield Town a comfortable victory.
Rooney gave Macc the perfect start with a goal on eight minutes. Lee Bell's free-kick from near the left touchline struck the Chester wall, but the ball rebounded out to the edge of the box for Rooney to blast a 20-yard volley low into the net past the helpless Jamie Spencer, making his debut in the Blues goal.
Spencer made a fine save on 27 minutes to deny Evans who burst into the area but could not beat the on-loan keeper, who dived low to his left to keep out his goalbound shot.
Chester failed to heed the warning and on 29 minutes Evans made an almost identical dash into the box, but this time he lashed a right-footed shot from eight yards past Spencer at his near post and in off the underside of the bar.
Ryan Lowe had Chester's best chance of the first half with a delightful curled effort from the edge of the box which sailed narrowly over the bar.
In the second half Chester piled players forward in a bid to get back into the game, but Town looked so dangerous on the break.
Colin Daniel nearly made it three on 74 minutes when he outstripped the Chester defence and rounded keeper Spencer, but he failed to beat defender Kevin Roberts who did brilliantly to clear the ball off the line.
Substitute Shaun Kelly had Chester's best opportunity of the game with ten minutes left when he rose well to meet Lowe's pinpoint cross, but could only steer a weak header into the arms of Silkmen keeper John Brain.
Chester currently sit second from bottom in League Two and will need a big finish to the season if they are to avoid dropping down out of the league for the second time in a decade.
