Robins coast to victory

Jeff Goulding's first-half penalty and a late Jimmy Spencer effort handed Cheltenham a 2-0 win over Macclesfield.

A scrappy opening saw both sides struggle to create, Darrly Duffy and Josh Low squandering half chances for the home side while Ross Draper volleyed high over the Robins goal at the other.

Cheltenham midfielder Kaid Mohamed was just off target on the half-hour when he latched onto a Goulding header only to push his shot just wide of the far post.

Four minutes later the home side were ahead. Russell Penn was tripped inside the area by Scott Kay and Goulding made no mistake from the spot.

It should have been 2-0 on 38 minutes when a Danny Andrew throw skimmed off the head of Macclesfield defender Nat Brown, forcing keeper Jose Veiga into a smart reflex save.

The visitors upped their game in the second half but, for all their possession, failed to test Cheltenham keeper Jack Butland on his debut, defender Shaun Brisley putting their best effort wide from eight yards.

The Robins made sure of victory two minutes from time when substitute Spencer steered home Low's centre.
