Hanson keeps Bantams up

A second-half goal by leading scorer James Hanson earned Bradford the 1-0 win that ensured their Football League survival and left Macclesfield still three points adrift of safety with only two matches left.

After a first half of plenty of endeavour but few goal-scoring chances, Hanson broke the deadlock with a close-range header which appeared to take a deflection off Ben Mills after Craig Fagan's free-kick found him unmarked at the far post. It was Hanson's 14th league and cup goal of the season.

Nahki Wells, who scored a hat-trick in Bradford's 3-1 win at Northampton last week, twice went close to scoring before he was booked for an apparent dive after Portuguese keeper Jose Veiga saved at his feet - an incident that also earned Veiga a yellow card.

Substitute Deane Smalley and skipper Ricky Ravenhill also went close to adding to Bradford's lead, Veiga diving at Ravenhill's feet while Smalley saw his 20-yard shot deflected for a corner in stoppage time.

The visitors put the Bradford defence under pressure at times, but keeper Matt Duke had few direct shots to save.
