Boston United secured their future in the Third Division with a hard working display and victory over Macclesfield.

A first half penalty from Peter Duffield and a second half header by Matt Hocking were ultimately enough to eclipse a later reply for the visitors by substitute Colin Little.

The first of the keepers into action was Steve Wilson for the visitors when he went sprawling to save a third minute drive from Simon Weatherstone.

Later on Richard Logan turned to shoot after a flowing Boston move but drilled an 18-yard effort too high.

But the breakthrough came on 20 minutes when Duffield scored from the penalty spot after Logan had been pulled back by Wilson after the keeper had misjudged a bouncing ball just outside his area.

Macclesfield responded briefly with a threatening free-kick by Chris Priest which curled across the face of the home goal.

Boston continued to look lively going forward and crosses from either side by Simon Weatherstone and Simon Rusk were scrambled clear in desperate fashion by the Macclesfield defence.

Seven minutes before the break the visitors saw another effort wildly miss the Boston goal when Michael Welch was way off target with a 30-yard drive.

The second half was only a minute old when Logan almost doubled Boston's lead but his lob from 20 yards dropped just over the bar.

But in the 51st minute the home side went two up with Hocking heading in his first goal of the season when meeting a Paul Ellender flick on from a cross on the left by Logan.

Macclesfield hit back with their first effort on target in the 57th minute with substitute Matthew Tipton seeing a low shot pushed round a post by keeper Paul Bastock.

In the 61st minute, though, Macclesfield cut the deficit when Little fired in after Bastock had parried a John Miles shot.

Boston responded positively in a bid to reassert command and in the 76th minute Logan found space to get in an 18-yard drive which Wilson pushed round a post.

Macclesfield went close to equalising in the 81st minute when Little headed against the bar from a Welch cross.
