But Alexander was delighted with his side's determined display and urged the supporters to be more realistic in their ambitions after the 0-0 draw.
He said: "We were poor against Northampton in midweek and we needed a performance like this to give us something to build on. Vale are flying and this was a very good point.
"It's very easy to criticise and the fans will want us to get into the Champions League, but our priority is to stay in this division.
"If we can get two or three more quality players to the club we would have a chance of getting out of this league, but finding and affording those players is difficult."
